DAZN or Sky: who offers more for football fans?
The UEFA Champions League is slowly turning into the knockout phase and in the 1st Bundesliga, too, things are getting closer to the point at the top this season than ever before. If you want to cheer on your favorite club live, you now need a streaming subscription.
The providers Sky and DAZN, among others, have divided the live broadcasting rights among themselves. In this overview you can find out what distinguishes the offers from each other, what the subscriptions cost and what needs to be considered.
Soccer Bundesliga – Sky has the edge
The current 2022/2023 Bundesliga season is more exciting than it has been for years and things are also getting hot in the 2nd Bundesliga. Football fans who want to join in the excitement at national level are best served by pay TV provider Sky.
Because the manufacturer puts together a special “Bundesliga soccer package” in which all Saturday Bundesliga games are shown live and exclusively. And that both individually and in a conference. In addition, the Bundesliga package includes all games in the second division, all relegation games and the Supercup.
Competitor DAZN is at a disadvantage here and has the rights for all Friday and Sunday games in the Bundesliga. In particular, the highlight of each game day, the game on Saturday evening, could tip the scales for many interested parties. This shows Sky exclusively.
DFB Cup and international football
The whole thing becomes more complicated if you are also interested in the DFB Cup at national level, European competitions such as the UEFA Champions League or other international leagues.
For the DFB Cup and England’s top division, the Premiere League, you need another subscription package from Sky in the form of the “Sky Sport” package. This is the only place where all DFB Cup matches and 250 Premiere League matches can be seen live and exclusively.
DAZN, on the other hand, scores with the broadcasting rights for the UEFA Champions League. The subscription also includes games from other top European leagues from Italy, Spain or France.
A total of 121 games from the Champions League can be seen live and exclusively on DAZN in the current season. The remaining 16 games, as well as a quarter of the games from the KO phase, are shown on Amazon’s own streaming service Prime Video.
WOW – What does the streaming provider offer for football fans?
Sky has been offering a new streaming service under the name WOW since June 2022. But this is not really new, because behind it hides the previous solution Sky Ticket, which only comes with a new name.
The service differs in a few points from that of the classic Sky offer. For example, WOW streams via a suitable device such as a smart TV, streaming stick, PC or games console, while you need a suitable receiver for Sky.
In addition, the WOW offer is much more flexible: While you basically commit to a subscription for one year with Sky, WOW can be canceled at any time with a monthly subscription. Although you save additional money if you also commit to the service for 12 months.
There are also differences in terms of image quality: With WOW, depending on the end device, a maximum resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels (i.e. in full HD) is possible, while Sky allows individual sporting events in 4K UHD quality with a resolution of 3,840 x 2,160 pixels transmits.
WOW puts together an exciting package for sports and football fans. The “Live Sport” subscription includes, for example, all Saturday games in the Bundesliga and all games in the 2nd Bundesliga, as well as all Premier League and DFB Cup games. The offer combines the two Sky packages for football fans.
Other sports – spoiled for choice
Doesn’t your heart beat only for “king football”, but are you also interested in other sports? Then the decision between Sky and DAZN becomes even more difficult.
Sky, for example, shows the premier class of motorsport in the sports package, namely Formula 1. It also includes 300 live games from the US ice hockey league NHL, the German handball league and various tennis sporting events such as Wimbledon or the ATP Tour.
DAZN, on the other hand, owns the rights to the US leagues NFL (American Football), MLB (Baseball) and NBA (Basketball). You can also follow the UFC, WWE, MotoGP or the Darts World Cup here, as well as other events live via the included Eurosport channels.
What do Sky, DAZN and WOW cost for football fans?
There are big differences not only in terms of the offer, but also in the prices of the different providers. However, Sky as well as WOW and DAZN keep putting together interesting special offers for new customers, where you can sometimes save a lot.
By default, the DAZN subscription, which can be canceled at any time, costs 29.99 euros per month. Provider WOW calls for the same price: Here, too, you pay 29.99 euros per month or reduce the monthly price to 24.99 euros if you commit to the service for a year.
Sky’s Bundesliga package normally costs EUR 32.00 per month, while the football package costs EUR 25.00 per month. With both packages, however, you are bound to the subscription for one year.
However, a discount for football fans beckons if you combine both packages. Here 40.00 euros are called up per month – you save 17.00 euros per month compared to the individual offers.
In addition, Sky offers the option of adding the annual subscription to DAZN to both packages. For the association of Sky Sport and DAZN you then pay a total of 54.99 euros per month, for Sky Bundesliga and DAZN 61.99 euros per month are due.
However, this does not mean a saving, because Sky charges the full monthly fee for the DAZN subscription, which you can currently get directly from the provider for EUR 10.00 less per month.
Conclusion: If you want to see everything, you need several subscriptions
The comparison between Sky, DAZN and also WOW shows one thing very clearly: if you really want to see all the games in the various football competitions live and in full, you need more than just a subscription.
If you are only interested in national leagues such as the Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2, the corresponding Sky package offers the best deal. For the DFB Cup and the Premiere League, however, you need another, additional package.
If the lower image resolution is enough for you and it is important to you to be able to cancel the subscription monthly, WOW is an interesting alternative and combines both Sky packages in one.
The Champions League and other international leagues, on the other hand, can be followed exclusively on DAZN. This is also the only way to see the Friday and Sunday games of the Bundesliga live.
