But March 14 also marked the end of a costly, as well as perilous adventure for Meta. The Metaverse, from which the company takes its name, is over. Mark Zuckerberg, the boss of Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Messenger and Instagram, wrote in a letter to staff that “the most important investment of the group” would now relate to artificial intelligence. So exit the Metaverse as the figurehead of the tech giant.
“Our most important investment is to advance AI and integrate it into each of our products,” he also said. “We have the infrastructure to do this on an unprecedented scale and I think the experiences this will enable will be amazing.”
Meta pays cash strategic choices
The ChatGPT tidal wave – like the joint success of Open AI and Microsoft – therefore also carries the metaverse in its path. Until last October, however, Meta relied on the development of this technology.

Furthermore, the worlds created on Horizon Worlds do not attract crowds. According to internal statistics revealed by the wall street journal, only 9% of worlds built by creators on the platform attract at least 50 visitors. Most are never visited. “An empty world is a sad world”summarizes a Meta document that details the company’s efforts to attract users to these virtual worlds.
