- 7 tank apps compared
- 7 tank apps in comparison: test procedures & results, expert opinion & best time
Refueling in Germany has not been fun for a long time. Although prices have fallen a little in recent weeks, the trend is still upwards – and there is no end in sight.
In addition, the price differences at German gas stations are huge: Nowadays, you can easily save ten cents per liter if you don’t use the first gas station that comes along, but switch to a cheaper one in the area. But this has to be found first – and this is exactly where this comparison test comes into play.
From the 25 or so tank apps that are currently available in the Apple and Google stores, we have selected what we think are the seven most interesting and subjected them to an extensive test.
But before that, a word about Market Transparency Unit for Fuels (MTS-K). Since August 2013, companies that operate public filling stations or have the right to set prices at these have to price changes for the fuel types Super, Super E10 and Diesel in real time to the MTS-K to transfer.
The prices of other types of fuel in the apps – and there are plenty of them – do not come from the MTS-K, but from the respective users of the app, from gibgas.de and from other sources, for example. The reliability of these pricing information may vary significantly depending on the app provider.
1-2-3 refueling – very good for iOS, but outdated for Android
This app is the clear one for us test winner for iOS. With Android, on the other hand, things are completely different, because the app is no longer compatible with newer Android versions. With iOS, on the other hand, everything is fine: the selection of fuel types is large, the operation and clarity are the best in the test field, the number of advertisements is small and hardly annoying.

There is an implementation for this Apple Carplayso the app also has that vehicle display can be used. 1-2-3 Tanken has five countries on offer, das subscription is with 5.99 euros comparatively expensive, but at a price iOS value. The app lists detailed information about the additional offers of the gas stations and even a photo. The only thing missing is a price forecast.

Fill up more – the subscription version is better than the free version with lots of advertising
The developers are doing a good job with the app refuel more done. From the operation to the range of functions, this app leaves nothing to be desired – the problems lie elsewhere. Those are really annoying big ads in the result lists and the menus, which can easily cover a third of the display. That’s why a subscription is almost unavoidable with Mehr tanken more than with almost all of its competitors, and that still costs 4.99 euros per year.
You get good value for that, such as a complete listing the prices of all types of fuel and e-charging stations, one price alert taking into account the favorite gas stations, one price forecasta consumption calculator and gas station prices along a route. Only detailed information on the additional offers of the gas stations is missing.

Conclusion: fill up more
Fill up more is the recommendation for Android phones, but a subscription is a must because of the many ads.
Gas Price Blitz – with access to Google Maps Navigation
Overall, we really liked this app. Total will seven countries offered in Europe, including Austria and Italy. The navigation to the gas station of choice is via Google Maps, the selection of fuel types is good.
The subscription price of only 1.99 euros per year is cheap, but no ads are displayed even in the free version on iOS. It’s different with Android, even if the advertising windows are rather small. Fortunately there is one gas station-related price history.

Conclusion: petrol price flash
The gas price flash is a good, recommendable app with small weaknesses and a very reasonable price.
Pace Drive – with practical information on the price history
The app Pace Drive occupies a special position in this test field, because it is not just a tank app, this is more about that Connected Fueling payment system of the manufacturer. The app is easy to use once you figure out how to toggle the list view between price and distance sorting.
It will be comparative few types of fuel listeda price history is only available at selected gas stations – but then with clear instructions such as “The price is too high, the prices will drop around 9:30 a.m.” or “Better fill up another time”. Pace Drive is free and there is no paid version or in-display ads. However, some features such as the forecast first after registration unlocked.

- Overall rating: 82 points
- PC Magazine test result: good
- Equipment (60 max.): 46 points
- Practice (30 max): 28 points
- Service (10 max.): 8 points
Conclusion: pace drive
Pace Drive costs nothing and focuses on the payment function. Quite good as a free tank app.
Clever refueling – extensive information for the selected gas station
In the Clever refueling app you have to get used to it a bit before all the functions become visible and usable. So can be between the List and map view For example, do not switch via the menu bar at the top or bottom, but via a small icon that appears in the middle of the screen.
And otherwise the service, such as the Price development and forecast, like to be a little more intuitive. The range of functions is against very large, only the gas station search based on a route is missing. Otherwise, there is not much to complain about with this inexpensive app, in which almost no advertising is displayed even in the free version on Android, and a little more on iOS, but it is quite subtle.

Details: Clever refueling
- Overall rating: 78 points
- PC Magazine test result: good
- Equipment (60 max): 50 points
- Practice (30 max): 20 points
- Service (10 max.): 8 points
Conclusion: Clever refueling
Clever tanking suffers from the less than intuitive user interface. Otherwise extensive and inexpensive.
TankenApp with petrol price trend – free, but with a lot of advertising
As with tanking more, this app is also sometimes annoying full-page advertisements. Therefore, you should rather take out a subscription for 2.49 euros per year. The clarity of the surface and operation is unfortunately not the best. There will also few types of fuel listed and useful things like a gas station-related price history are missing.
General information such as appears at the top of the window The prices are rising. Fill up NOW or after 5 p.m. Below that is an advertising link that is far too easy to accidentally tap on.

An app with clear weaknesses, the fun is also clouded by intrusive advertisements.
ADAC fuel price – some app changes are in the house
The ADAC fuel price app is completely free and thankfully ad-free. However, the days for this app seem to be numbered, because the ADAC is working on a modified application that combines ADAC maps and the fuel price app. The app can already be used to maneuver to the destination gas station using a route planner.

What about the app? is missingare useful features like a price historya price alert or details of those accepted at the gas station payment options. However, there is the option of Ryd directly to pay from the app – if the gas station offers it. The selection of types of fuel for price comparison is relatively small.
