United States / Wokism: Joe Biden signs an executive order requiring artificial intelligence to have a woke ideology
President Biden on Thursday signed an executive order that critics warn will allow the creation of an artificial intelligence (AI) woke that will “promote racial division and discrimination.”
The executive order directs all federal agencies to establish an annual “equity action plan” aimed at helping “disadvantaged communities.” [NdeFDS: “les communautés défavorisés” signifie “les groupes raciaux ayant subi des discriminations dans le passé”]
In a section titled “Integrating equity into government processes,” the director of the Office of Management and Budget is tasked with “supporting decision-making fairto promote the deployment fair financial and technical assistance and to help agencies advance fairness, as much as possible wherever possible“.
The section gives further instructions regarding the AI: “When designing, developing, acquiring, and using artificial intelligence and automated systems in the federal government, agencies shall do so, consistent with applicable law, in a manner that promotes the equity.”
On Twitter, political influencers and tech pundits all condemned such a move as a moral hazard.
Christopher Rufo, the journalist who helped bring “critical race theory” to public attention, warned: “Biden’s new executive order creating a DEI (Diversity-Equity-Inclusion) bureaucracy aims to create a woke AI. The executive order directs the federal government to “[protéger] the public from algorithmic discrimination” and to deploy AI systems “in a manner that promotes fairness”.”
Commentator Trent England tweeted a comparison to the uprising of killer robots in the Terminator film series, “Biden administration working on woke edition of T-1000.”
“Biden’s latest move: the discrimination by an algorithm. My question is, what will be the penalty for the algorithm?” asked Jeff Cunningham, a former journalism professor.
Conservative author Michael Sebastian tweeted: “The news of the death of wokism is greatly exaggerated.”
