The European Commission is spending €387,000 to promote itself in the metaverse to 18-35 year olds. The virtual gala will have finally attracted only 5 people
Just five people turned up for a party on Tuesday evening organized by the European Commission’s external aid service in the Metaverse to spark young people’s interest in the European Union.
Devex correspondent Vince Chadwick said on Twitter that he was finally the only remaining guest of the evening, after “a confusing initial discussion with the five other humans who showed up”.
Apparently, only a few of the 44 people who liked the official trailer were intrigued enough by the avatars dancing to house music on a tropical island to join in the fun.
The Commission’s External Aid department spent a total of €387,000 to develop a metaverse platform to promote its Global Gateway initiative, reports Devex. Under this initiative, the Commission intends to disburse €300 billion by 2027 to build new infrastructure in developing countries.
A Commission spokesperson told Devex that the aim of the promotional post was to “raise awareness of what the EU is doing on the global stage” among 18-35 year olds who can be found “mainly on TikTok and Instagram” and who are “neutral towards the EU” and “generally not exposed to this type of information.”
