#SwedenGate: Swedes accused by immigrants they welcome of being racist, unwelcoming, slavery
For several hours, the internet has been reacting strongly to a thread on Reddit, which immediately drew attention to racism in Sweden, under the hashtag #SwedenGate.
The online conversation started with a question on the massive AskReddit subreddit, the one where almost 36 million users regularly interact.
#SwedenGate started with the question “What’s the weirdest thing you’ve ever had to do in someone else’s house because of their culture/religion?”. The question that was posted last Thursday elicited many responses, including one that got the most attention.
In the now-deleted reply, a Reddit user talked about visiting a Swedish friend’s house and having to wait for his friend while he was having dinner with his family, uninvited.
Some have also highlighted the Swedish chocolate dessert debate yet called a name deemed racist towards people of African descent.
To counter these accusations, many Swedes have taken to Twitter and other social media to defend their country, citing the work it has done to welcome refugees and immigrants from around the world over the past decades.
